on august 3, 2014, an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 hit ludian county, zhaotong city, yunnan province. according to the statistics of the department of civil affairs of yunnan province, the earthquake has killed hundreds of people, and tens of thousands of houses collapsed or was seriously damaged. now, emergency relieves come from across the country, and the water source, water protection and water security are key points in the effort of disaster relief and recovery.
as the disaster relief is carried out, the treatment of medical wastewater and sewage is increased accordingly. solving the water security is a key problem to control post-earthquake serious epidemics. if the sewage is not disposed properly, it would threaten the water supply security in the downstream cities. thus, in the battle of ensuring clean water sources, sewage plants play a very important role.
yang chao, general manager of no. 2 business division of poten enviro, was once stationed in guanghan sewage treatment plant which was 80km away from wenchuan when the 512 earthquake occurred in 2008. at that time, guanghan was the great camp to accommodate injured people, and the sewage plant was entrusted a heavy task. with a high sense of responsibility and good skills, yang chao led the team to ensure the normal operation of the sewage plant in guanghan, made outstanding contributions to ensure the water security in the disaster-stricken area and won an award from the guanghan government.
he said that the pipes of sewage plants could be damaged easily after a strong earthquake. cracks and even displacement might appear. the aeration devices were also prone to leakage. sewage plants should immediately take emergency measures to ensure normal operation.
secondly, after the earthquake, preventive measures should be strengthened to guard against aftershocks. after each aftershock, timely and detailed inspections should be conducted on leakages of structures within the plants, displacement of pipes, and cracks in aeration devices.
after a catastrophe, epidemic prevention was a most important task. mr yang stressed that sewage plants should deal with the disinfection problem first. the intensity of disinfection must be intensified to ensure that the effluent water quality (including the total number of bacteria and e. coli) met the standard;
next, sludge disposal should be considered. sludge would be disposed more strictly. the sludge should be disinfected with disinfection powder and quicklime in the plants and then would be shipped to designated places for further disinfection
