a forum about green responsibilities and opportunities went on in full swing at china europe international business school (ceibs) on a freezing sunday.
chief editor liu shuguo of china environment news chaired the forum.
the ceibs alumni forum entitled “art of trade, virtue of wealth” was co-hosted by the ceibs environmental protection alumni association and china environment news and organized by poten environment group co., ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “poten enviro” or “the group”). this was the third edition of the forum and its theme came as “green development from responsibilities to opportunities”. those who were in attendance included economists, government officials and industry researchers. they have made captivating explanations and discussions about the reform, challenges and opportunities the environmental protection sector is undergoing from different perspectives.
in addition to rational explorations, the well-spirited auctions also occurred as part of the forum. the primary school students who had received the aid from the ceibs alumni-funded water station created many hand-painted works. these paintings, immature technically yet full of sincerity and vision, deeply touched everyone in presence. the ten pieces of them were auctioned on the site for 39,573 yuan. it costs 93 yuan to supply a student with drinking water for a year. the raised money could bring 425 students a year’s drinking water supply and also a glimmer of hope.
compelling remarks by big names
liu shengjun, economist and former executive vice president of ceibs lujiazui institute of international finance, is a determined innovationist. in his speech entitled “supply-front reform for environmental protection sector: tasks, opportunities and challenges”, he mentioned such popular topics as government subsidies, public-private partnership (ppp) projects, and approval procedures and thoroughly interpreted the distorted pricing, profit-driven operation of local governments, and other phenomena identified from the current environmental improvement drive. his speech, biting and thought-provoking, offered a deep insight into the status quo of the sector.
highlights of his remarks: the supply-front reform never means de-capacity alone or such specific tasks as “cutting overcapacity, de-leveraging, reducing corporate costs and shoring up weak points. instead, it is intended to overhaul the existing institutions and concepts. the institutional and conceptual issues in the environmental protection sector deserve adequate attention. only amid the reform for such old institutions and concepts, can the sector have a better future.
as a senior researcher, mr. fu tao, chief partner of e20 environment platform and dean of e20 policy & market research, shared his reflections on how the environmental protection sector can innovate against the “two mountains” theory and offered his original interpretations on the positioning, business logic and growth direction of the sector.
highlights of his remarks: the construction of ecological civilization starts from the environmental protection sector. there is plenty room for imagination. as far as he is concerned, it will be impossible for any industry to develop alone in the future. this is equally true for environmental protection, agriculture, energy and real estate. environmental issues and energy issues are facing everyone and need to be addressed with joint efforts. so the greatest companies of the next generation will be bound to emerge from the environmental sector.
mr. wu shunze, vice president of chinese academy for environmental planning (caep), had participated in the formulation of many environmental protection policies. on the forum, he gave a speech about the value of ecological products. starting from this frontier theoretical perspective, he made a brief introduction to the overall plan on the ecological civilization reform and shared his forecast for where the ecological civilization and environmental industry would go in the future.
highlights of his remarks: green rivers and mountains stand as a huge reserve of wealth. to unlock it, we should be able to make ecological products valuable and available for sale. in this way, investment will make money by facilitating commodity trading. this is bound to be a peerless achievement. but its realization requires the removing of the existing institutional, taxation and pricing obstacles, getting rid of the reliance over channels, and working hard to make theoretical explorations, restructure institutions, to have industries move first, and innovate in practice.
poten enviro's chairman & ceo zhao lijun chaired the roundtable discussion about whether environmental protection meant cost or opportunity.
dribs and drabs add up into great love
ms. liu xuesong, secretary-general of ceibs environmental protection alumni association chaired the auction which made a hit.
mr. li chengfeng, director of the publicity and external liaison department of china environmental protection foundation, made a brief introduction to the ceibs alumni-funded water stations.
the auction was the most exciting and touching link of the forum. ten pieces of paintings created by children were auctioned at the starting price of 93 yuan. in the wake of the host’s introduction to each painting was a continuous stream of bids. surely, every bid, large or small, represented a bit of priceless care which held everyone in awe.
